Frank Pizzoli talks with a classicist in the footsteps of Homer." The Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide 25, no. 1 (2018): 22–25. This article features an interview with Daniel Mendelsohn about his memoir, An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic, conducted by Frank Pizzoli. As discussed by Pizzoli, Mendelsohn’s insights share a unique journey he embarked on with his 81-year-old father, which included attending a seminar on Homer's Odyssey at Bard College, followed by a themed cruise. In this insightful chapter, Kathleen Riley examines Daniel Mendelsohn's memoir and frames it as a contemporary Telemachus. Specifically, one interesting note in her analysis was that the narrative centers on the author's father and his academic journeys, which lead to enriched interpretations of the epic. Further, the journey has culminated in a thematic critique that explores Jay's complex character, his relationship with his father, and ultimately, the discourse regarding nostos (or homecoming). Additionally, these concepts were linked to the enduring rele...
