Research Question, Approach, and Annotated Bibliography
[WLOs: 3, 4, 5] [CLOs: 1, 3, 4]
Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read the instructor guidance, the mixed methods section of Chapter 7 and all of Chapter 10 in the Creswell and Creswell text and Chapter 2: Formulating Questions, Conducting a Literature Review, Sampling Design, and the Centrality of Ethics in Mixed Methods Research of the Hesse-Biber ebook.
Begin your assignment by briefly describing the topic you selected in Week 1. Narrow your topic down to a precise focus. Apply the scientific method by developing a specific research question. Determine which approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods) is called for by the wording of the question. If a quantitative or mixed methods approach will be used, also formulate a testable hypothesis that addresses the research question. Identify the philosophical paradigm or worldview that underlies your research approach.
The second part of the assignment is the annotated bibliography. Refer to the Writing Center’s Annotated BibliographyLinks to an external site. resource for formatting details, a sample, and an optional template. Your bibliography must contain peer-reviewed journal articles, including one literature review article on your topic, at least one quantitative research study on your topic, at least one qualitative study on your topic, one mixed methods study relevant to your topic (if available), and at least two articles about the research design and methods you would use. These sources should be obtained from the UAGC Library. Refer to the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible SourcesLinks to an external site. and the Library OneSearchLinks to an external site. tip sheets for help in finding appropriate sources. Google Scholar may be used, but only if the articles are available in full text at no cost. For assistance researching on this platform, refer to the Library’s Google ScholarLinks to an external site. tip sheet. A minimum of six peer-reviewed journal articles are required for the assignment.
Write two paragraphs about each source in the bibliography. In the first paragraph, summarize the main points of the article in your own words. In the second paragraph, explain how this article can be used in your final research proposal. For instance, research studies will be included in the Literature Review section of the proposal; articles about methods will be used to support your research plans in the Methods section of the proposal. You may cite the course text, but it does not count as one of the six required bibliography sources.
In your paper,
Describe your narrowly defined research topic.
Develop a specific research question. If the research will have a quantitative component, also develop a testable hypothesis.
Determine which approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods) best aligns with the research question.
Identify the philosophical paradigm underlying the research approach.
Create an annotated bibliography of at least six peer-reviewed journal articles including both research studies on your topic and articles about how to use selected research methods.
Sources for the bibliography must include the following:
one literature review article on your topic
at least one quantitative research study on your topic
at least one qualitative research study on your topic
one mixed methods study relevant to your topic (if available)
at least two articles about the research design and methods you would use
Summarize the main points of the sources in one paragraph for each article
Explain how the articles will be used to inform and support your final research proposal with one paragraph per article.

The Impact of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy on Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental illnesses worldwide. Thus, it is a significant area of concern for mental health stakeholders. Emerging research highlights the evidence-based treatment known as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is used for anxiety disorders/cognitive-meditational therapies in clinical settings. This improves emotional regulation by changing negative thought patterns and maladaptive behavior learned over time. With the increasing demand for effective, simple psychological interventions, understanding the empirical basis and applicability in real life, which CBT has greatly impacted, has become even more crucial. This paper proposes the implication of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy on anxiety disorders; research question formulation, mixed methods research approach about the philosophical paradigm, and annotated bibliography to justify the research proposal will be discussed.
Thesis Statement: Anxiety disorders respond positively to cognitive behavioral therapy as a treatment method since it significantly reduces anxiety symptoms while imparting long-term coping strategies to the individual. Moreover, CBT is flexible enough to work across various clinical settings and patient groups.
Narrowly Defined Topic
The present research has focused on the efficiency of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in treating anxiety disorders, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) in the adult population. Anxiety disorders are among the most common forms of mental disturbances throughout the world that affect millions of people (Kieling et al., 2024). It leads to severe impairments in everyday life, social activities, and quality of life. CBT is structured, short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy focusing primarily on identifying maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors. It also changes the factors by which anxiety is maintained. Though most studies have concluded about the efficacy of CBT as a whole, this study aims to focus mainly on understanding how adults suffering from GAD and SAD respond to CBT in terms of symptom relief or long-term therapeutic outcomes.
Research Question
How effective is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in managing anxiety symptoms among individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD)?
Hypothesis
Adults diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder and treated with cognitive-behavior therapy will show a clinically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms when compared to adults who are untreated or treated with other modalities.
Research Approach
Given the nature of the research question, a mixed-method approach is the most appropriate. Integrating quantitative and qualitative data allows for a comprehensive exploration of the subject. The quantitative part would include measurable outcomes such as symptom reduction scores and relapse rates measured through standardized instruments. This included the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) scale or the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). These data will then test the hypothesis that individuals receiving CBT experience a significant degree of improvement as compared to not receiving any form of therapy or using alternative forms of therapy.
Philosophical Paradigm
The inquiry shall follow under the pragmatic philosophical paradigm. Pragmatism concentrates on the research question without dissociating itself from quantitative or qualitative approaches that would best answer the question. This approach allows for methodological pluralism, accepting the validity of objective results and subjective experiences. Thus, in this investigation, pragmatism accommodates the numerical reductions of symptoms with qualitative evaluations given by the participants to account for the totality of CBT's impact. This paradigm is ideal for applied psychological research, where informing and improving real-world therapeutic practices is the focus.
Annotated Bibliography
1. Literature Review Article
Cuijpers, P., Cristea, I. A., Karyotaki, E., Reijnders, M., & Huibers, M. J. (2016). How effective are cognitive behavior therapies for major depression and anxiety disorders? A meta‐analytic update of the evidence. World Psychiatry, 15(3), 245-258. https://doi.org/10.1002/wps.20346.
In this meta-analysis study, the authors tried to put together the evidence from a variety of 144 randomized controlled trials to analyze the effectiveness of the CBT techniques used for treating major depressive and anxiety disorders. The study indicates that CBT is significantly more efficacious than control conditions and is among the most researched and empirically validated treatment interventions. For the anxiety disorders tackled, effect sizes were consistently large, particularly concerning generalized anxiety and social anxiety. The authors also discuss CBT's methodological quality and long-term outcomes, which show its long-standing effects.
This article is a foundational resource for the literature review section of the research proposal. It lays a firm evidence base for CBT's effectiveness and supports the paper's primary thrust. Further, the meta-analytical method and inter-disorder comparisons help to contextualize the present research within a larger clinical picture that demands renewed focus on adult populations with GAD and SAD.
2. Quantitative Study
