Reflect on Public Health values, frameworks, principles and skills

Demonstrate sound communication skills, written, verbal and visual using a range of media and current information technology

Discuss the complexities underpinning community diversity and inclusion when addressing the broader determinants of a Public Health issue

What you need to do An annotated bibliography

At the beginning of the unit you will be allocated to a team and assigned a current public health topic (our team chooses climate change). For this assessment, you are required to locate:

a) Two peer-reviewed academic journal articles (found via a library database such as PubMed)

b) One book chapter from an edited book (an edited book contains chapters usually written by different authors collected in one book by an editor(s)). You cannot select chapters from any recommended textbook for this unit for this assessment

c) One webpage from a reputable source (e.g. Australian government or peak body organisation)

relevant to the topic assigned to your team. Our team chooses climate change. Please use it within 10 years of articles and if you can please use Australia's resources because I am studying in here.

For this part of the assessment, you should follow the library guidelines for writing an annotated bibliography found at http://www(dot)citewrite(dot)qut(dot)edu(dot)au/write/annotatedbibliography.jsp.

Before you start this assessment item, you should familiarise yourself with the Assessment 1 Grading Criteria and make sure you address all criteria.

For each source you need to do the following:

Provide the bibliographical information (the reference). You must use QUT APA (American Psychological Association) as the referencing style. You can find information about QUT APA on the library homepage and the online QUT Cite/Write guide found at (http://www(dot)citewrite(dot)qut(dot)edu(dot)au/

Summarise the research findings or the main arguments or ideas presented by the author/s in your selected source. The purpose of the summary is to offer a quick and easy snapshot of the content of the source in your own words.

Evaluate the source, that is, is the source accurate? Reliable? Current? Is the author/s qualified and expert in the field? Is the text descriptive or analytical? What evidence has the author(s) used to support their ideas?

Reflect about how useful you found this source to be. Did it add to your understanding of the public health topic? How did it help your learning? Was it easy to read? Are there any useful references (or links in the case of the webpage) to follow up?

IMPORTANT: Use your own words. You cannot use direct quotes from the source in the summary, evaluation or reflection paragraphs. You do not need to provide a reference list as you have already included the references as the headings to each annotation.

This assessment task must:

Be submitted as a Word document

Include a title page displaying your name and student number, the unit’s code and title, the Unit coordinator’s name and the title of the assessment

Be in size 12 arial or times roman font

Annotated Bibliography on Climate Change
MacCracken C. Michael (2019). What is climate change? Biodiversity and Climate Change Transforming the Biosphere (1st ed.). Yale University Press London and New Haven.
Summary
This source is a chapter from an edited book titled "Biodiversity and Climate Change: Transforming the Biosphere." The author defines the climate, discusses natural conditions that may affect a region's climate, and lists human activities that disturb the earth's energy balance by releasing greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. By providing historical references, the author considers glacial-interglacial cycling as the earth's climate change. Using the records of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration provide graphical details of changes in atmospheric temperature that occurred between 1880 and 2016. It also provides credible evidence that the earth's atmospheric temperature has increased by 1 degree Celsius since the mid-nineteenth century and discusses the impacts of climate change on the earth's geography, sea level, and air composition using real-life examples. It uses graphical projection models of climate change to clarify the gravity of the situation for future generations. Furthermore, the chapter sheds light on varying degrees of climate change impact based on the land's geographical features. It uses a graphical projection of the impact of the increase in atmospheric temperature. Finally, the chapter emphasizes the need for an extensive statistical interpretation of the impact of climate change.
Evaluation
This chapter is reliable as the author is a renowned and expert scholar of natural sciences, and it provides an insight into the definition of climate change and makes a clear distinction between natural and anthropogenic causes of climate change. This source uses credible and current references to explain the causes of climate change and its projected impact on the twenty-first century. Overall, this source is useful for understanding the fundamental aspects of climate change and its impact; however, it does not provide extensive details regarding the various anthropogenic sources of climate change and lacks statistical evidence to support the argument.
Reflection
This source provides essential information about the natural and anthropogenic causes of climate change and attempts to verify the role of human activities behind the current effects of climate change. In this way, it enhanced my understanding of the causes and history of climate change. It is a highly descriptive discussion, and for research, this source can become a valuable part of the literature review as it adds knowledge about various aspects of climate change; additionally, the credible data given in this source can be used to evaluate the impact of climate change in the present and future scenarios.
Since this source is a useful resource for understanding human beings' role in increasing climate change's impact, the information used in this chapter helps make awareness campaigns regarding the impact of climate change on public health. Moreover, using this information in my research, I may be able to design effective policy guidelines aiming to reduce human activities' role in increasing climate change's impact.

Summary
This source is a comprehensive literature review that systematically evaluates research papers published on climate change and global warming between 1989 and 2003 using Google Scholar and PubMed as sources. This article aims to estimate the extent and proportion to which the topic of climate change and global warming has appeared in scholarly research. In this way, it aims to explain the gravity of the situation and validate the hypothesis that early literature on climate was mainly focused on discussing the devastating impacts of climate change. This source provides credible information about climate change science, various agreements to control climate change, and various causative factors behind this global problem. Using statistical tools, the article provides graphical and textual empirical data on the proportion of citations of the topic that occurred in the given period. Based on the result of this review, 1546 (72%) sources out of the total of 2143 sources used cited the topic most as the percentage of their 165,133 is equal to 80% of the total citations. Based on the results, the review concludes that many citations related to climate change and global warming indicate the growing concern regarding the issue. Besides, this trend also validates that climate change is a reality and not a myth.
Evaluation
It is a credible and peer-reviewed source that provides reliable information regarding the impact and importance of climate change for humans and other living organisms by providing details of the history, causes, effects, and risks associated with climate change based on specific reference to temperature marks. Besides, it is a highly analytical source as it provides empirical evidence of the growing interests of scholars and scientists in the climate change domain by indicating their citation rate per annum. It also highlights how research studies in this domain tend to neglect the real and existential risks associated with climate change and focus on more apparent effects. Nevertheless, this source does not provide extensive information about the consequences of climate change and potential remedial measures. Moreover, other than statistical data showing trends of citation, this source fails to provide graphical and empirical information that these sources provide regarding the topic.
Reflection
This source enhances my ability to understand the impact of climate change beyond the boundaries of time as it helps me understand the trend of growing interest in climate change that scholars and scientists have shown in 25 years. Thus, this source enlightens me about the gravity of the problem of climate change by providing an understanding of the growing increase in the number of scholarly sources regarding the issue of climate change. Since this source uses credible references to elaborate on the nature and impact of climate change and the treaties, I can use this source as a credible reference in the literature review. Moreover, the Union of Concerned Scientists is a crucial source that this article uses; I can use this source to further elaborate on the impact of climate change and its devastating impact on present and future generations.
