Francesca Merlan is a professor of anthropology at Australian National University. She has extensive experience in social and cultural anthropology, anthropology of development and she also has interests in social organization, language and culture and social theory and development. Merlan has undertaken several projects in Northern Australia where she has examined the changes in the lives of aboriginal people and other projects in Western Highlands of Papua in New Guinea where she has examined the changes in people’s lives. This article is important for social scientists who would wish to examine the effect of agency in shaping human behavior.
