PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PROFILE
Part I
I am a Chinese and I grew up in New Zealand since I was the age of four years. I am Bi- lingual. In high school, I was able to attain good grades until I joined University. I was very outgoing until my teenage years when everything changed. Currently, I am a 3rd-year university student. I work as a project manager at Air New Zealand. I believe that not all leaders can be famous like Martin Luther King or Benjamin Franklin. Most leaders are ordinary people. Sometimes one can walk down the street and run into someone who is a powerful leader and you don't know. I am a good leader. Although people may believe that leaders are born and not made, I believe that anyone can become a good leader if one dares to do it. Many words come into my mind when I want to describe what makes me a good leader.
As a leader I am honest. I value integrity because I know that integrity is a supreme leadership quality that will remain unquestionable in my career path. Honesty and integrity are important elements that make a good leader. My followers cannot be honest yet I lack these qualities myself. For me to succeed as a leader, I am supposed to stick to these values, because without ethics, it is impossible to achieve anything. I am also very confident because this quality assists me to ensure that other people can follow my commands. My teacher once told me that if am not sure about my decisions and abilities it will become very impossible for my subordinates to follow me. As a leader, I need to ooze with confidence and be assertive so that I will be able to gain respect and trust from my followers. My degree of confidence has made my followers trust me since I became a leader in Air New Zealand.
I have also been able to inspire other people by setting a good example. I can attest that things have not been easy but when things get tough my subordinates will always look up to me. How I have reacted has made me gain trust from them. I have learned to handle things positively and think positively and this is depicted in my actions. I can easily overcome challenges in the future. I am a committed person because I know a lot of people are looking up to me as a leader. I have had a smooth leadership because of commitment and passion. This is because all my subordinates have respected and this has, in turn, helped me to perform better. My predecessors once told me that if I lack passion and commitment, it will be very hard to motivate other people to achieve their goals.
What separates a leader from a follower is the ability to be innovative and creative. Today the world is changing rapidly. Technology has changed how people operate today. Being creative and innovative has assisted me to maintain my leadership position in the organization. I have been able to stand out from the crowd through my ideas. I have also been able to come up with unique ideas and these ideas have assisted my followers to make their goals a reality. For example last year I came up with a research project on how we could reduce the rates unemployment in the country. I received some recommendations from top-notch organizations and leaders who wanted to implement the plan.
Leadership is not easy and not everyone was born to be a leader. Leadership requires constant reflection and self-evaluation to ensure that you are serving your followers well. No one is perfect but I believe there is room for improvement. As a leader, I have several weaknesses. One of my weakness is that I do not listen to the ideas of other people due to lack of trust. This has made me to handle more tasks than I am supposed to because I do not trust my followers to perform them as they are supposed. I also have a habit of procrastinating things. Sometimes I have not been consistent with my performance because of stagnancy. I am also very conservative. Ego is an enemy of good leadership. With time I have been able to attain the highest ranks of leadership and this has increased my ego. In case I am overwhelmed with success, my ego will grow.
I have skills in economics and management. I have skills in marketing, budget analysis, financial analysis, organizational awareness, problem-solving, time management, and management consultancy. As a leader, I am loyal, generous, optimistic, sincere, fair, and determined. However, sometimes I might be impatient, petty, disrespectful, and unforgiving.
I believe that people have to do everything in their power to achieve maximum success and pleasure in their life. I also believe that pleasure should not surpass the amount of pain one feels in life. This is my ethical position and with this, I have been able to attain success in my life. I have been able to make my goals into reality. I also love protecting those people that I care about. As a leader, I believe that one should be fair but in case one is mistreated then fairness should not be exercised at all. As a leader, I have learned to respect the cultural beliefs and values of other people. Today, we get into conflicts now and then. Knowing how to manage conflicts is very important. I resolve conflicts by either avoiding the conflicts or compromising.
To be a good leader, one must have the capacity to influence other people. When a leader cannot influence other people, then the ability of such a leader to make to envision a reality is elusive because no one can be able to do it alone. These qualities have assisted me to become a good leader. Several things influence me as a leader. I have had an opportunity to share with some of the top leader in my community. I love leveraging networks and connecting with people from different parts of the country.
There is one question that has assisted me in the journey of leadership. This question is “A good leader should always…” How I finish this sentence has assisted me to know my leadership style. I am a democratic leader. I have always used democratic leadership because it has been effective. The reason why I use this approach is that I can be able to make decisions based on the input of other members in my group. This leadership style has enabled me to treat everyone equally. Even those people that are viewed to be low-level followers, I have allowed them to exercise some authority especially in making decisions. I allow my followers to give their opinions before any decision is reached. After listening to their opinions I consider their thoughts and make a decision based on their inputs. There are several academics journals that have explained on different leadership styles and qualities. These articles have been important in my journey of leadership.
