Annotated Bibliography Instructions:

Topic: Why do people often actively choose to believe lies?

For this graded assignment, you are to write an annotated bibliography of materials relevant to your chosen research essay topic from eight different scholarly sources.

Each annotation is to be 150 words (+/- ten words) of text, excluding the bibliographic reference itself.

At least three sources are to be scholarly articles and two either scholarly books or a chapter from a scholarly book.

Otherwise, any sources that you deem to be credible (see “Evaluating sources” in the Purdue Online Writing Lab - Purdue Online Writing Lab. (n.d.). Evaluation sources of information. Retrieved from https://owl(dot)purdue(dot)edu/owl/research_and_citation/conducting_research/evaluating_sources_of_information/index.html) are acceptable, such as government reports or statistical databases.

The annotation must describe both the content of the source, and describe how the source is relevant to your essay topic.

Do not copy (which is plagiarism) or rely on abstracts.

Goleman, D. (1985). Vital Lies, Simple Truths: The Psychology of Self Deception (pp. 11-271). Simon and Schuster.
This famous book gives a biting insight into human nature which tends to deceive itself in order to make biased relationships and day-to-day interactions. It studies the vital brain functions and different communal behaviors involved in trying or actually avoiding the facts and truths that can be fatal to our social interactions. The author has declared the manipulated self-preservation and bewitching indispensable to the survival of social health. This book argues that self-deception makes us see the world in our own desire and makes it easy for us to endure. The source is relevant as this actually supports the fact why people usually listen to toadying lies or accept swindles. The human need to be in an optimistic environment cannot always be fulfilled due to the struggle for existence and competitive factors of the race, which renders harmful effects on human psychology, which is an intriguing factor helping people deliberately accept lies through self-deception.
Thurman, D. (1999). The Lies We Believe (pp. 1-95). Thomas Nelson.
The book reveals that most of the time, human psychology helps them to generate and hold lies about phenomena that one cannot witness or understand to the core. The book is an embodiment of different psychological cases proving that humans have the tendency to assume and suppose situations and circumstances to their own will and tell lies to themselves accordingly. These lies sometimes have been around for a really long time without being assessed and recognized, and many are the beliefs, attitudes, and expectations they have been taping in their mind under different circumstances through their own level of emotional intelligence. The truth is claimed as an iceberg in this book and is claimed as hard to find. Thus, relevant to the topic at hand, this book, in a part of it, reveals why people choose lies, and these are the lies they speak to themselves.
Vrij, A., Granhag, P., & Porter, S. (2010). Pitfalls and Opportunities in Nonverbal and Verbal Lie Detection. SAGE journals. Retrieved 17 July 2021, from https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1529100610390861.
This article contains detailed research about the factors that can be the hindrances in the detection of lies and the factors which people deliberately miss in the detection of lies due to the lack of motivation. Also, a part of it discusses the opportunities which help in the detection of lies. According to this article, usually, acceptance of lies is based upon the higher level of tolerance for the pleasant embodiment of fabrications which allures human prudence to be overruled by the mendacity. Also, it argues that certain methods to detect and actually bring out the lies can be brutal and tend to violate the tender dynamics of a conversation which can be lethal to social interactions and therefore cannot be applied in daily life. In conjunction with the topic, it highlights how self-deception and misinterpretation of verbal and nonverbal cues are also considered good reasons to accept lies as an easy task over investigating the truth.
Sheridan, Z., Boman, P., Mergler, A., & Furlong, M. (2015). Examining well-being, anxiety, and self-deception in university students. Taylor & Francis Online. Retrieved 17 July 2021, from /doi/pdf/10.1080/23311908.2014.993850?needAccess=true.
This article is a study of co-vitality which comprises of few psychological variables and their effects on the emotional well-being of an individual. These psychological factors include self-satisfaction, hope, optimism, and a few others. The article is a case study of different individuals and reveals that all these factors render positive effects upon constructing emotional health and reduce anxiety. This study proves that self-deception highly affects self-efficacy, and this is why human nature tends to accept lies more than truths. Self-satisfaction works as a great factor towards optimism and happiness, and to achieve this goal, humans need to turn a blind eye to certain bitter facts and accept pleasant lies. This phenomenon of self-deception can be dangerous if increased above certain limits, but it is surely a promising one in self-satisfaction and self-efficacy if attained to limits. Thus this article provides strong reasons why people prefer to accept lies actively.
