While the study utilized a mixed method approach, the focus was on the quantitative approach used. The objective was to devise and test a self-management method, which patients with chronic could use to manage the pain. The intervention involved the use of a wide variety of concepts in psychology, behavioral, educational and physical strategies. The quantitative method employed was an uncontrolled pilot study, which aimed to test if the mixed intervention was feasible. Participants for the study were adults, with pain in their joints or muscles and those capable of participating in a community-based group course. The investigators used behavioral change theories to inform patients about pain and pain management. The course further addressed understanding and accepting pain, mood and pain. Through such an approach, the facilitators found out that, participants did gain an understanding of pain. Participants valued social interaction, which influenced their confidence and self-esteem. The main outcome measure used was questionnaire instruments. The course was feasible, acceptable and deliverable.
