Admission Essay Instructions:
1. This university is committed to training students in the importance of social determinants of health and how to care for patients from diverse backgrounds with integrity and compassion. In your own words, please define “diversity” and explain the different ways that you have demonstrated a commitment to multiculturalism in your own life. (500-word response maximum)
Other than my experience of being a CNA, other ways are my:
- Church Involvement:
I am an active leader in your church, which likely includes members from different cultural backgrounds. Whether it’s through worship, small groups, or community outreach, I've learned to communicate with and lead people with diverse stories, upbringings, and values. That’s a huge example of cross-cultural understanding and empathy in action.
-Language Skills:
Being fluent in Ilocano and Tagalog, and competent in English, makes me a natural bridge between communities. I can assist people who may feel isolated due to language barriers, especially in healthcare or faith-based settings, ensuring they feel heard and understood.
-Migration Experience:
Moving from the Philippines to the U.S. gave you firsthand experience of what it’s like to adapt to a new culture, navigate unfamiliar systems, and face identity shifts. This lived experience fuels my compassion and helps you relate better to immigrants or underrepresented groups.
-Youth Ministry Leadership:
Leading in youth ministry means learning how to connect across generational, social, and sometimes ethnic gaps. Creating an inclusive, welcoming space for youth of all backgrounds is a powerful demonstration of multicultural leadership.
2. What experiences have you had that contribute to your interest in nursing (for example, paid or volunteer healthcare experience, community involvements, or life experiences)? (300 words maximum)
Experiences:
- Back when I was still younger, around 13-14 years old, whenever the local government came into our little barangay to administer vaccination or give free circumcision service, I always helped in the best way I could at that age, like facilitating lines, giving away snacks to the staff. (not sure if this counts, but I showed how willing I am to help at that age)
-When I migrated here in the U.S., I became a Direct Support Professional, where we took care individuals who have disabilities, helping them in their day-to-day lives.
- I am a CNA, working in a skilled nursing facility until now.
- Took care of my grandma, who has dementia.
3. Describe examples of your leadership experience in which you have helped others, resolved disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time. You may include experiences in school as well as in the community. (300 words maximum)
- Another experience I had, different from the ones I've mentioned above, was one of the most meaningful leadership experiences I had during my final year of high school in the Philippines, while I was involved in our Theater Arts program. Our director and production managers were known for being very selective when it came to accepting new members, especially during auditions.
I remember one student who tried out but froze on stage due to stage fright. She couldn’t get her lines out and ended up walking off in tears. Later, I found her crying in her classroom, overwhelmed with disappointment. I sat with her, listened, and encouraged her not to give up. I’m not sure what I saw in her at that moment, but I just knew she had potential that was worth fighting for.
I decided to speak up on her behalf. Since I was one of the student leaders trusted by our director, often representing our class and helping with behind-the-scenes responsibilities, I used that relationship to ask for one more chance for her. Thankfully, he agreed.
We worked together on her confidence, and during her second audition, she proved herself. Not only was she accepted into the program, but she also went on to win “Best Supporting Actress” after I had already moved to the United States.

Response 1: Diversity and Multiculturalism
In nursing and healthcare, diversity entails recognizing and including human experience in distinct dimensions such as languages, cultural beliefs, religion, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, abilities, and individual perspectives. In this context, diversity represents both healthcare providers' backgrounds and various population segments served. Real diversity in healthcare is about ensuring all persons accept the working and organizational environment, appreciate it, and comprehend that the social factors, including, but not limited to, literacy, financial position, geographical location, and social roles, significantly impact health status.
An individual experience, specifically my migration to the U.S. from the Philippines, enhanced my commitment to multiculturalism, offering me an immediate comprehension of cultural adaptation challenges. For instance, there were stark differences within the U.S. healthcare system compared to the Philippines based on communication, beliefs, and intervention approaches. From this transition, I realized that effective and quality care demands cultural humility and recognizing patients’ needs and preferences. Working with teams of multicultural groups as a CNA has nurtured cultural sensitivity, taught me how to respect others' cultures, and taught me how to tailor treatment plans, hence supporting the whole-person concept, which is sensitive to clients' diversity.
My language skills, including English, Tagalog, and Ilocano, have been essential in healthcare in aspects such as patient-centered care, which covers effective communication. For instance, I have observed that Filipino patients struggle while communicating in English, and by switching to their native language, I have always reduced tension while building rapport, which is crucial in building therapeutic relationships. From these knowledge areas, I have learned that language barriers in nursing are an important area of focus to enhance patients' care without discriminating against the use of language when delivering justice in healthcare services.
On the other hand, my multicultural competence has also been strengthened by churches' leadership responsibilities involving community health initiative organizations serving different groups of people. In promoting interfaith activities, particularly in the clinical setting, it becomes clear that the cultural aspect of health and spirituality is inextricably linked to the framewo...
