Personal Goal Statement The Personal Goal Statement is a description of the applicant's purpose for completing the graduate degree. This essay serves as a writing sample to be reviewed by the Graduate Admissions Committee to determine the applicant’s scholarly writing skills. The essay should address: 1) why you chose to complete a graduate degree in your selected area of specialization at the University of South Florida; 2) a current healthcare/practice issue or focus within the nursing specialty which you are passionate about; and 3) how your training/degree completion at the University of South Florida will enable you to achieve your goals and impact the selected healthcare/practice issue or focus within your specialty. The APA-formatted essay of 450 to 500 words should demonstrate scholarliness and a strong command of the English language. A scholarly essay is defined as an essay that expresses progression of thought in a clear and concise manner while using correct grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and sources when appropriate (See APA 7th edition style and resources). Applicants identified with a need of scholarly writing support to promote success in graduate writing courses will be recommended to take writing class. Here is my background and possible answer. I’m from Eritrea, Africa. I been living in the states for about 12 years. I have been working in customer service and healthcare since I got here in a different role. I stated working as a CNA then as a nurse after graduation. I started as an ESL learner at a community college and went on to graduate from university as a nurse. I became a nurse in 2019. Since I became a nurse I worked in a rehab, transitional care and long term care for about two years and then transitioned to psychiatric nurse afterwards. Since my transition, I have been working in adult and geriatric involuntary inpatient hospital as my full time and at co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorder unit as part time and another perdiem job in voluntary and involuntary psychotic, detox and long term outpatient substance use unit. I feel like serving patients struggling with mental health, substance use disorder and homelessness is my calling and thus why I’m applying to school to become psychiatric nurse practitioner so I can better impact the community and population I serve. As a person of color, someone who identifies as queer and growing up in a third world country, I want to end stigma towards people struggling with mental health especially black and brown people and people who identify as queer. People in these community are prone to being abused, exploited, victimized and incinerated due to adequate mental health care related to hesitancy to seek treatment for mental health and stigma. There other issues many people face are not having adequate mental health follow up after being released from hospital and leading to self-harm, harming others, not taking care of themselves, using substances and ending up being hospitalized or incarcerated. I feel like there is a need in the community and my background and experience will help me understand and serve the community I love.
